If you were ever curious as to how much body parts can fetch on the black market, Medical Transcription created a snazzy infographic to show you. Some parts are shockingly cheap! Like would you want a new shoulder or a new iPad? Both cost 500 bucks.

Other organs are prohibitively expensive, like a kidney. That little sucker costs $262,000 in the US (other countries have it for cheaper)! Here's the full list of body parts and their cost:

Pair of Eyeballs: $1,525
Scalp: $607
Skull with Teeth: $1,200
Shoulder: $500
Coronary Artery: $1,525
Heart: $119,000
Liver: $157,000
Hand and Forearm: $385
Pint of Blood: $337
Spleen: $508
Stomach: $508
Small Intestine: $2,519
Kidney: $262,000
Gallbladder: $1,219
Skin: $10 per square inch

The hand and forearm combo deal seems to be the best bang for your buck. Check out the full infographic.

It really should be a legal market, I know we have some weird moral objection to it. A young father gets killed in a car accident, Their is a market his family gets $100,000 for his salvageable parts. No markets, He gets buried and his family goes into debt, or he donates his organ some third party makes profit from his tragic early death. I can see which one is more moral.

Norbs's comment

That is a great point... but it can lead to some shady deaths. I've heard some horrible stories about what spouses do to turn a profit and come out on top. So I think this would actually create some problems that we didn't have before.

On the other hand I think that there would be a lot more legitimate uses of this money than shady and at least it's the families that profit and not some random third party that sold your organ. So you really make a great points.

Either way this country still is not OK with using aborted fetuses for stem cell research so this might be a bit much for them to swallow. They're not ready...

Sure, but you could always give your organs away free of charge anyway, even if it was legal to sell them. By assigning a price ceiling of zero, you create shortages. I can guarantee you that we would have more organs available for transplants if you could sell them.

Mind you, in 10-15 years, it'll be mostly a moot issue, since we'll be able to grow full organs by then, though we probably will still need some transplants for interim cases; someone gets in an accident and needs a liver for the few hours it'll take to grow a new one, for instance.
