Q  How do I remove built-up soap scum from glass shower doors? Trust me, I’ve tried every product on the market with no luck. Short of replacing the doors, what can I do?

A   I know your problem. I not only tried all those products on my doors, I even tried different acids and spent hours scraping with a razor scraper. The best solution is to buy a power buffer (about $25) and automotive rubbing compound from a Home center or an auto parts store. These are the same tools used to buff out car and boat finishes.

I tried the fix even though I was worried that the rubbing compound would scratch the glass. After spending about 15 minutes on each door side, I got rid of about 90 percent of the deposits and I couldn’t detect any scratching. Here’s how. Remove the doors and lightly clamp them to a set of sawhorses. Smear compound on the glass and polish away. Believe me, it’s quicker and easier than razors and chemicals. You can also treat the glass with Rain-X (also available at auto parts stores) to keep future scum at bay.
