Q   Our dishwasher door leaks. We had a serviceman come out and check everything. Seals, water level control, drain, valves—you name it, he checked it. What else can it possibly be?

A   I’ll bet you rinse off your dishes with soapy water before you load the dishwasher. Am I right? If residual dishwashing liquid sticks to the dishes, it can bubble up into thick, viscous suds in the bottom of the dishwasher and impede the spinning spray arm. If the arm gets mired in suds at just the right position, it can spray high-pressure water directly at the edge of the door and force water through the seal. If you feel the need to prerinse, use only water—no soap. And unless you’d like to relive an “I Love Lucy” episode, never, ever use hand dishwashing liquid in a dishwasher—you’ll be buried in suds.
