Revive A Dead Car Opener

Remote car door openers are sweet when they work properly, but having to push the button a dozen times to open the door is irritating. If your door opener only works at close range, sporadically or not at all, a dying or dead battery may be the cause.
Replacement batteries cost a couple of bucks and are available at Home centers, hardware stores and discount stores like Wal-Mart and Target. The identification number will be stamped on the battery back. Buy a new battery with a matching identification number.
The door opener will either snap or screw together. Photos 1 and 2 show two opener styles. Before removing the battery, note its position— printed side up or down —and then install the new battery the same way (Photo 2).

1. Poke a flat-blade screwdriver into the recess on the edge of the opener. Twist the screwdriver to pop the opener apart (on some you have to remove a small screw).

2. Flip out the old battery with a small screwdriver or pocketknife (there may be two batteries stacked together). Install the new matching battery just like the old one and snap the opener back together.
