Fixing A Storm Door Closer
When you need to carry in a carload of groceries, move the old couch out to make room for the new, or let out the smoke from the burnt pizza you forgot in the oven, it’s sure nice to have a storm door that stays open on its own. However, after a thousand uses, the hold-open washer can flatten out and lose its grip.
Take 10 minutes, grab a hammer and locking pliers, and follow the steps in Photos 1–3 to fix this problem.
Under the pressure of the door closer, removing and replacing the hold-open washer is difficult. To simplify the job, hold the storm door open by clamping a locking pliers tight on the rod against the closer tube. While the closer rod is disconnected, tighten or replace the four screws anchoring the jamb bracket.

1. Disconnect your storm door closer by opening the door, clamping a locking pliers on the closer rod tight against the closer tube, then removing the short connecting pin from the jamb bracket. The locking pliers allows easier removal of the connecting pin by keeping the closer rod fully extended, and relieving the tension on the pin in the jamb bracket. With the closer rod free, slide off the hold-open washer.

2. Restore the angle on the hold-open washer by securing it in a vise and tapping it lightly until it bends over an additional 1/8 in. from its existing angle.

3. Test the gripping power of the hold-open washer by reinstalling it on the closer rod, reinserting the short connecting pin in the jamb bracket and releasing the locking pliers. Move the washer against the closer tube. If the storm door doesn’t stay open, remove the washer and tweak the angle with the hammer until the washer achieves the proper bite on the closer rod.
