Every dog has his day, and this year it's June 23, Take Your Dog to Work Day. Thousands of companies welcome furry family members for the day, and many plan special activities, says John Long, a spokesman for sponsor Pet Sitters International. Before bringing your German shepherd in, be sure your company participates, and get your boss's okay too. Make the day go smoothly:

  • Check that none of your co-workers are allergic to or afraid of dogs.

  • Consider inviting a local shelter to display photos of dogs up for adoption, or hiring a pet sitter to take the pooches out for breaks.

  • Bring food, treats, toys, a leash, crate and cleaning fluid, in case of an accident.

  • Host a dress-up contest or photo session. Serve dog treats at lunch. Get more ideas at petsit.com. Sorry, cat owners: This event is geared to canines, who tend to socialize better.
