Faster Airport Check-Ins
Sometimes it seems all you do at the airport is wait -- to check your bags, go through security, actually board the plane. But the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is working with private companies to shorten the wait. Beginning in June, many airports across the country will offer Registered Traveler programs. You pay a yearly fee (about $80), provide some personal information and get fingerprinted. If approved, you get a high-tech ID card. At the airport, you can skip the long security lines and head to a special shorter line for registered travelers, though removing shoes and jackets is still mandated. Think of it as the airport version of an HOV lane. Just insert your card into an ATM-like kiosk and scan your finger (or get an iris scan) to verify your ID. In a test program at Orlando Airport, registered travelers waited about 14 seconds; other passengers, 30 minutes. Indianapolis, San Jose and Sacramento airports have signed up for the Clear program (flyclear.com). For more information, visit tsa.gov.
