Android has taken over in the United Kingdom as the #1 smartphone operating system in terms of market share. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech measured smartphone usage between January 2011 and January 2012 to find that Android had a 36.9 percent share while Apple’s iPhone had 28.5 percent. In fairness, this should be expected. It technically compares software with hardware and Android is installed on hundreds of phones while iOS is only installed on the iPhone, which is divided into five different models — two of which Apple has discontinued. Keeping this in mind, it’s understandable   Read more >>
It's time for Facebook to go hat in hand to Apple and make a deal to get integrated into its operating systems, iOS and OS X.The two companies have been in a stand off for a long time.In 2010, Steve Jobs said Facebook's "onerous terms" prevented it from being integrated into iTunes social network Ping. We're not sure if that was Steve Jobs bending the truth to his liking, or if Facebook was really asking for something outrageous.Assuming there's some shade of truth to what Jobs said and Facebook was asking for something Apple wouldn't give, Facebook needs to drop it and accept Apple's de   Read more >>
Apple may have broken sales records last quarter selling 37 million iPhones, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the company’s mobile phone business is booming everywhere around the world. iPhone market share dropped in China for the second quarter in a row, while cheap, locally-produced smartphones take over.Apple’s smartphone market share in China fell to 7.5 percent last quarter down from 10.4 percent in calendar Q4 2011. There’s two probable reasons for this. While Apple’s classic pay-for-quality works in most parts of the world including here in the states, in   Read more >>
Apple’s not holding an event in February — strange, unusual or otherwise. But it is holding one in March — to launch its next iPad.Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follo   Read more >>

The introduction of the Apple iPhone 4S in Beijing turned ugly Friday morning when Apple failed to open its flagship store and a frustrated crowd reacted by pelting the store’s gleaming glass walls with eggs.Apple said in a statement that it had temporarily suspended sales of all iPhones at its five mainland China stores out of concern for the safety of customers and employees. The phones will still be offered online, through Apple’s official partner, Unicom, and at authorized resellers. The statement did not say when Apple stores would resume selling the iPhone 4S.Demand for iPhon   Read more >>
For years, analysts have debated whether tablets will eventually replace laptops. Turns out that consumers largely believe they will--and the elderly are far more convinced of that fact than whippersnappers.Polling company Poll Position, which surveyed 1,155 registered American voters last week, found that 46 percent of respondents believe tablets will eventually replace laptops. About 35 percent of those folks say that devices like Apple's iPad or the Amazon Kindle Fire won't replace notebooks. Nearly 20 percent of respondents had no opinion on the matter.Although it's generally believed y   Read more >>
Apple’s next iPad could come in two flavors and be offered alongside the existing iPad 2, according to supply chain sources speaking to DigiTimes. The Taiwan-based publication believes this could lead to a three-tiered pricing strategy aimed at making the iPad appealing to a much broader cross-section of consumers. So is Apple’s next tablet move designed to lock up the market from top to bottom? The how and why of pricingDigiTimes published its interpretation of the chatter it’s hearing on Tuesday, suggesting we could see a Wi-Fi iPad 2 starting at $299, then a mid-tier iPad   Read more >>
It was always assumed that Mozilla's Firefox browser would one day overtake Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the global browser market, ending IE's reign that began when the Redmond software giant buried Netscape Navigator years ago. But as it turns out, Google Chrome might have a better shot of overtaking IE, and at the rate things are going, it could happen this year.According to data from StatCounter, Google Chrome increased its global browser market share from 15.68 percent in January 2011 to 27.27 percent by the end of the year. Microsoft's Internet Explorer, meanwhile, dropped from   Read more >>
Love it or loath it, the smartphone app Color is one of the most innovative Web products to have launched this year. It has a user experience that is as unique and different as Twitter was 5 years ago. This has led to confusion about how to use Color and questions about its value. In this post we look at the early uses of Color and analyze its chances of emulating the success of Twitter.Color launched last month in a whirl of hype, mostly due to the eye-opening $41 million prelaunch funding. But since then, the user experience has been the center of focus. Many people have complained that the   Read more >>
We’ve all had plenty of time to digest the iPad and all its magical wonders and in the few months we’ve had it it has sold over a million units. But that just means another few billion people are still on the fence about it! Here are a few things I’ve discovered about the iPad in my travels thus far and I hope will help you make your iPad buying decision.

This year forget buying your tech in the post-Christmas sales. Because a 20 per cent increase in Chinese minimum wage is gonna hike up electronics prices come January.

In fact, the increase is only hitting the Guangdong province of China. Doesn't sound too big a deal, right?

Wrong. Because that one province has been the making of China. As a result, it's filled with big electronics firms and state-owned companies, as well as plenty of smaller and medium-sized private firms. That means it accounts for a huge share of Chinese industrial output. It also makes it hugely influential, and mean   Read more >>
Apple’s iPhone accounted for just 4.2% of the mobile handsets shipped in the third quarter of 2011, but the company still managed to rake in more than half of the industry’s profits. Among the eight top cell phone vendors in the world, Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said Apple accounted for 52% of total operating income between them. The figure is down from 57% in the second quarter. Samsung accounted for 29% of profit among top vendors, up from 18% in the June quarter, and HTC accounted for 9% of total operating income. RIM’s value share slid to 7% from 11% in the   Read more >>
The economics of the consumer electronics industry dictate that on a long enough timescale, all products will become low-margin commodities. The companies that make products household names are destined to fade from the public’s memory. Will Apple suffer the same fate as others before it, such as RCA, who revolutionized television sets in a similar fashion but were relegated to the dustbin of history decades later? It’s products will most certainly be commoditized, but thanks to its ecosystem of software and services (the Stores and iCloud), it will largely avoid the fate of RCA (   Read more >>
Before Apple even officially announced the iPad, traditional publishers started to get excited about the potential of the device. Much like the iPod did for music, Apple's rumored tablet could help them make the transition to digital, and perhaps even allow them to solve the problem the Web couldn't: monetization. The iPad finally did launch, followed by its slimmer, fast successor and magazines and newspapers began developing native apps for the device. More recently, iOS 5 came along and brought with it Newsstand, a feature that gives publications special treatment and a storefront from w   Read more >>
