The school, the job and the social conventions lead us gradually to get serious and to lose the ability to laugh spontaneously. It’s a real loss, because it has been shown scientifically that the sense of humor and laughter are excellent for your health and among other things, it is a very effective antidote against stress.

Fun is a nice feeling for each and also a means of protection and treatment. Laughter and smile is a good means of relaxation and also relieves inner tension.

The laughter enhances the body oxygenation and it stimulates the diaphragm, thereby eliminating the residues in the lungs. In addition, it increases the breathing capacity and it reduces muscle tension. In cardiovascular terms, 20 seconds of intense laughter equals 3 minutes of fast walk. This applies even if we laugh without reason or for pleasure, as if it is a therapy.

Several studies have found out that laughter contributes significantly to the stress  relief, increases the pain tolerance (after surgery, migraines, arthritis), reduces the blood pressure and it increases the levels of endorphins (happiness hormone). It also increases the number of NK cells, T lymphocytes and secretor IgA – three fundamental components of the immune system. In general, the experimental studies consist of comedies watching along with documentaries and then the analysis comparison of the biochemical reactions.

The first one that tried a laughing therapy was Norman Cousins in 1964. Using the positive thinking and laughter he managed to cure a very painful joints disease, considered as irreversible. His method consisted in watching comedies and the consumption of vitamin C. He found that every 30 minutes of viewing provided 2 hours of sleep without pain. After six months, Cousins was completely healed.

In 1995, the first laughter club is created by Dr. Madan Kataria in India. This new approach, called “the laughter yoga”, promotes laughter with no reason, just to relax, to escape the tensions and inhibitions and to develop a positive attitude in life. Since its creation, this method proved to be a huge success, demonstrated by more than 1,000 laughter clubs worldwide.

The Laughter Sessions

A laughing therapy session takes place in groups, preferably in the morning to start the day in a pleasing manner. The therapy includes laughter techniques with the help of stretching and breathing exercises that are a part of the yoga techniques.

The sessions usually begin with warm up and deep breathing exercises with the purpose to relax and oxygenate the body. After that the laughing exercises take place which are actually some games that aim to stir laughter and to make it contagious. For example, the “patients” throw an imaginary balloon to each other, each begins to laugh when they catch the balloon and the game continues until everyone has its share of good laughter.

If you want more laughter in your life, there are thousands of tricks to do it (good jokes, comedies of all kind, circus and the intentional exaggeration of things). Humor is the perfect solution for all the problems.
