Help hair out in the heat

Hair often suffers in hot weather, but there are plenty of ways to avoid damage.

Most people love lounging around in the sun and forget about the risk it poses to their mane. UV rays can dry locks and wreak havoc with dyed hair, so to ensure your strands stay healthy Karen Brown, Salon Director of Hair by JFK, has shared some secrets.

First up, if you are out and about try to keep your tresses out of direct sunlight.

“Use a scarf or hat to cover your head,” Karen told Cover Media. “Not only does this provide extra UV protection, but it also helps your scalp to retain moisture. A hat reduces damage caused by wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling, and protects colour-treated hair.”

Washing hair too often can strip locks of natural oils, so Karen advises a quick rinse under the shower after a day at the beach or pool. Remember cooler water temperatures are kinder to frazzled strands. When brushing the tangles out of wet hair use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to prevent snagging strands.

Avoid using heated tools such as hairdryers and straightening irons during warmer weather as this will further aggravate parched locks.

Braids are a big trend for locks this season and this style will also help to shield your crowning glory from harm. Before you start patiently plaiting, make sure you keep the look loose.

“A messy braid is ideal for keeping your hair under control in the summer and minimising exposure to the sun,” Karen explained. “Tight hairstyles can be damaging because they tend to pull and tear hair, especially if your hair is dry from the summer heat. This look works well with beach waves, so get braiding on the beach.”

Whenever you are applying sunscreen to your skin, remember your mane too. Karen recommends running your hands through your locks once you slathered yourself with sun protection.

If any bottle blondes out there dread turning green after a dip in the swimming pool, give this quick recipe a go.

“Try rinsing out your wet hair with ¼ cup apple cider vinegar and two cups water to get rid of discolouration and dullness,” Karen said. “It helps to get your hair wet before entering the water because then it won't absorb as much chlorine.”

Finally, coconut oil is a great product to de-frizz and add moisture to your mane. It will also create smoother curls if you leave naturally wavy hair to air-dry.
