5-5-2 Summarizing and Adjourning (2)

Bill: Well, everyone is here. Shall we start? As you know, we are here to discuss whether or not this is the right time to expand our business, particularly whether we should open more agencies next year. Sally, you are the manager of the marketing department, perhaps you can briefly introduce the situation first.

Sally: Yes, I've been looking at our sales figures over the past years, and it seems to me that we should set up agencies in new areas where there is a great deal of demand for our sort of travel services.

Ivan: Sorry to interrupt. I think you're a bit quick with your conclusion there. I have a rather different interpretation of the situation. Personally speaking, I'm in favor of expanding our present agencies rather than setting up new ones. Please think of the cost of risking new ventures in new place with new overheads.

Mark: Excuse me, Ivan. I would break in here. I think you're over pessimistic. I agree with you that we have to spend on facilities, staff training, advertising and so on. But Sally is right for the demand is there. Maybe Denny can tell you something about the Youth Tourism Corporation.

Denny: Yes. I'm going to mention that. The day before yesterday, I overheard from a friend that the Youth Tourism is planning to expand their business in the north-west of the country. I mean, if we don't grasp at the opportunity, our competitors will. Don't you think so?

Ivan: Well, I still stick to my point, I think it is more advisable to upgrade our present facilities and postpone opening new agencies to next year instead of this year.

Sally: Well, everybody knows the saying "Time is money." If we miss the opportunity, our rivals will take over the market. And I do think it is necessary to open new agencies.

Bill: All right, I feel we've discussed this matter fully. You have made some valuable points and suggestions. To sum up, there are strong reasons for opening new agencies this year. Well, I will present your ideas to the board of directors.

Sally: OK, then that brings us to the date and time for the next meeting, right?

Bill: Remember you guys switched to a pre-set date and time two months ago.

Sally: Right, I almost forgot, we picked the second Tuesday of each month, so that's August the Twenty-sixth.

Ivan: Right, I have that date open.

Bill: Does anyone have a conflict with that date?

Sally: That looks like a go to me.

Bill: Is there any other business? No? Okay, that's all for today. I'd just like to conclude by thanking you all for your time and contributions, I'll get back to you as soon as I get a response from the board.
