109 Khruschev Knocked the Wrong Door

In April 1956, Khruschev and Bulganin visited Britain. Nominally Bulganin was the head of the Soviet delegation and Khruschev was only one of the members of the delegation. Their hosts, however, knew the importance of Khruschev's position in the Soviet politaical life so they accorded this delegate special treatment.

During the visit, the Soviet leaders were invited by the British Prime Minister Another Eden to spend a weekend at his country house. It was a very old house, beautifully situated in pastoral surroundings. Each room was heated by an old-fashioned fireplace buring coal. All the bedroom were on the second floor. Khruschev and Bulganin each had a bedroom near their hosts Mr. and Mrs. Eden's bedroom.

Khruschev was a heavy sleeper. Though the coal fire gave out very strong sulphuric odour, it did not bother Khruschev at all and he soon fell sound asleep. After all he had grown up in a mining district.

He woke up very early the next morning, got dressed and came out of his bedroom. He though he should wake up his colleague Bulganin, so he knocked the door of one of the bedrooms which he thought to be Bulganin's. To his utter amazement is a woman's voice which answered his knock.

Khruschev immediately realized the blunder he had made: he had mistaken his host's bedroom for Bulganin's. He had recognized the voice to be Mrs. Eden's as during dinner the previous evening he had chatted with his hostess. Mrs. Eden had asked him about the Soviet missiles, what kinds there were and what range they had. Khruschev had told her that Soviet missiles could easily find their targets in the British Isles. Mrs. Eden had not expected such an answer to her question so she bit her tongue and said no more.

Realizing that he had knocked at the wrong door Khruschev immediately turned tail and got away as fast as he could. How would he have delt with the situation had Mrs. Eden opened the in answer to his knock? Indeed he would had a very hard time to give an explanation and make his apologies. And so he never mentioned the affair to his hostess leaving her wondering who it was who had knocked at her door at such an ungodly hour. He did however tell Bulganin about his adventure and they both had a good laugh over it.
