132 Struggle with Tourette’s Syndrome

Manchester United's goalkeeper Tim Howard has overcome a rare neurological disorder to become a star of English soccer.

It sounds candid for a young goalkeeper to call himself "an easy target", but Tim Howard, the American who bungee-jumped out of obscurity to join Manchester United, is not about to commit professional suicide with a single phrase. What he means is that he suffers from a medical condition that could have damaged his career.

It's the same, he says, for all Tourette's syndrome (TS) suffers Their repertoire of tics, grimaces and strange compulsion makes them noticeable. even ridiculed.

“As a child, it's difficult because people notice and say things" In adolescence. he was beset by a whole new wave of tics and head movements The symptoms still change unpredictably from Lime to time but he sounds well able to adjust.

Howard is proof this needn't be so. His sudden rise to The English Premier League from the unsung New York-New Jersey Metrostars show not just how successful he has been in controlling the symptoms of his condition, but chat TS. a neurological disorder that affects one in 2500 people. need not carry a stigma or inhibit personal ambition.

"It's a hurdle, but it's certainly not a brick wall." he says. "We all have something that's different about us. Not bad. not good. just different We all suffer from something and we need to be more understanding and more accepting of one other."

In America. he won a New York Life Humanitarian, of the Year award for his work to help public understanding of Tourette's. In England he has spoken to TS children at the training ground at Carrington. "It gives them hope and inspirations to see someone like me succeed," he says." If you're blessed enough and lucky enough, it will be the worst bomb you have."
