Philip K. Dick 是当代北美最著名的畅销书作家之一，影响了村上春树、斯皮尔伯格等大家，被誉为美国的“金庸”，但他生前却屡遭退稿，穷困潦倒。 他预言了基因技术、克隆技术、记忆移植，写下最具科学性的科幻作品，却被大学退学，曾五次离婚，被怀疑精神失常而送进戒毒中心。
他的《少数派报告》、《全面回忆》吸引了汤姆·克鲁斯、施瓦辛格等巨星，催生了好莱坞的票房新高，成为科幻电影的里程碑，但他当年却痛恨好莱坞。 他一度想摆脱科幻，但最终以科幻的形式拓展出全新的人生和社会的传奇:“我是职业科幻小说家。我与幻想为伍，我的人生就是一个奇思幻想。”
本书《高塔中的男人》充满了偏执狂和复杂真实的游戏，这种“假如纳粹德国获胜”的剧情是曾经被写过的最非主流的历史。本书被science Fiction Book Club列为“过去五十年间最优秀的科幻小说和奇幻小说”之一。
