Cute Robots Invade the Smithsonian

Welcome to the National Museum of African Art.Among the Smithsonian's priceless relics, an unexpected present-day device."My name is Pepper." Pepper is the museum's newest employee."She's not a real person. She's just like technology. She's like an iPhone, but more advanced."

What would you like? Pepper turns to whomever she's speaking and moves very smoothly for an operating system."I only heard part of what she said." "Who are you?" "My name is Pepper."Smithsonian officials say she's no gimmick. "Pepper's really good at customizing information."

Do you see the round window behind me? It's called the rose window. And in a museum which kids might see as stuffy."Which, which you like to try?" Pepper livens up a selfie. "I'm ready! Say Cheese!"SoftBank robotics donated 24 of the humanoid robots to the Smithsonian with more to come."Hi, my name is Pepper." This one highlights a display in the National Museum of African Art. "Ready? One, two, three."

Pepper explains the exhibit but she also knows foreign languages like Swahili. Take a listen. Pepper is programmed to answer a finite number of questions so for now these pint-sized guides still can't replace the real ones. "Check these out.""Most people have never met a robot, so sometimes they look at you like what do I do, I've never talked to a robot before."

But young people who are more comfortable with new technology get along just fine with the robots."It was dancing to the music. I've never seen a robot do that before."

By the looks of it, not many have. "Make sure to stop by and visit me again soon." We're quite sure they will.
