From Homeless to Employment in Silicon Valley

I became homeless for 18 years and I wandered these streets like a zombie day and night for 18 years.

Del Seymour knows almost everyone in the Tenderloin, one of San Francisco's roughest neighborhoods and now home to companies like Twitter Airbnb and Uber.

Company started moving their headquarters in this neighborhood but they started importing people from other regions and countries to work in our neighborhood.

It was a tough break for locals like Daniel Henry a formerly homeless techy.

Us against the tech guys. You know how am I ever gonna to work in that industry.

My friends see how tech-savvy I am with it. You should be working in tech and I was like you're right,I should. So Seymour took action and started making cold calls to tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

Not gonna come in my neighborhood and ignore my people. You're not gonna pretend like we're not standing on the corner all day trying to find a job.

You're gonna include us in your business. To everyone's surprise the company started responding. That's when Seymour founded Code Tenderloin, a six-week training course that focuses on job readiness.

They learn HTML CSS and JavaScript Code Tenderloins students visit many of the major tech companies to network ask questions and learn from staff. If you have any questions let me know

Each visit to a new tech company is amazing. I learned something new. Hopefully I can learn something else coding. I'm really getting into coding.

We're trying to create alternative pathways either through like an internship or apprenticeship kind of program.

Tuition is free and in some cases Code Tenderloin even provides computers.

They should have a slogan like from the streets to six figures in six weeks.

Well only a handful of students have found full-time tech positions. Many have found other full-time employment through the program.

Seeing yourself as being able to be employed again and even if you don't land a coding job, you might land a different kind of job. And just that movement towards that is really important for folks in terms of lifting them out of poverty.

The work is definitely keeping these students busy, lifting neighborhoods and spirits, Code Tenderloin style.
