Biggest Ever Studies on Aspirin Show Risks Don't Outweigh Benefits for Most People

Aspirin is what many people reach for to relieve headaches and muscle pain. Doctors have long recommended taking a daily low-dose aspirin for preventing a heart attack, stroke or other heart problems in people who have already had one.

It's clear that people who have had heart attacks or most strokes can benefit from taking a baby aspirin everyday. It's very important, it reduces your future risk of stroke, heart attack and can make you live longer. Now major research has tested whether aspirin can help prevent first-time heart problems and the results of three separate studies indicate: no.

One study looked at more than 12,000 patients at moderate risk of a heart problem because of other health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smoking. The results showed no benefit perhaps because they were taking other medications that lower the risk anyway.

Risk that a person has changes over time and some that changes due to some of the things that we do like managing their risk factors and then taking care of them when they develop symptoms.Another study of more than 15,000 adults with diabetes found the good aspirin did was outweighted by a great risk of serious bleeding. We also saw almost 30% increased risk in major bleeding.

So that was bleeding bad enough to get you into hospital mainly from the gut or bleeding into the eye or brain and if it was into the eye, it was bad enough to threaten your sight. Based on these studies revealed this weekend at the European Society of Cardiology, the advice does not change.Doctors say aspirin best benefits people who already have heart disease.
