From electric cars to smartphones and laptops, lithium-ion batteries power nearly everything, which in turn generates its own problem.If you exponentially have an increase in battery demand, you have to displace them somehow, or refurbish them.Rice University grad student Kimmai Tran and research scientist Babu Ganguly have discovered a way to dissolve parts of lithium-ion batteries without the extreme heat and toxic fumes involved in traditional recycling.We all know how to bleach things out with corrosive acids,but we don’t know how to do it with solvents that are simple and safe to use and also they’re biodegradable.Tran and Ganguly used what’s called a deep eutectic solvent made of choline chloride and ethylene glycol.By immersing part of a battery cathode in the solution and heating it to about 130 degrees Celsius,the researchers are able to extract cobalt, a key component of lithium ion batteries.The metal also happens to be carcinogenic.
