Can and Be Able To

“can”和“be able to”的区别

Modal verbs are helping verbs. We use them with main verbs to help us express ability, possibility, necessity and permission.Today's question is about a modal that is commonly confused with an expression. Here's the question, which comes from a listener named Cafer:

情态动词是助动词。我们将它们与主动词连用,以帮助我们表达能力、可能性、必要性和许可。今天的问题与一个情态动词有关,这个词通常与一个表达混淆。下面是一位名叫贾费尔的听众提出的问题:

Hi! Would you like to explain the difference between "can" and "be able to"? Thank you.

你好!你能解释一下can和be able to的区别吗?谢谢。

Hi, Cafer!I can explain the differences between the two.

你好,贾费尔!我可以解释这两者之间的区别。

I just used "can" to talk about my ability to do something. We also use "be able to" for abilities, but usually only when "can" is not possible.I'll tell you what that means in a minute.

我只是用can来表达我做某事的能力。我们也用be able to来表达能力,但通常只在can不能用的时候才用。我一会儿会告诉你那是什么意思。

But first, let's explore the word "can."

但首先,让我们探讨一下can这个词。

Can is a modal verb, we use it to talk about present or future ability or possibility.

can是情态动词。我们用它来谈论现在或未来的能力或可能性。

I can play the guitar.

我会弹吉他。

You can buy the tickets online.

你可以在网上买到票。

You must use "could" for the past tense, such as in, "You could have bought the tickets online."

你必须用could来表示过去时,例如,You could have bought the tickets online.

We also use "can":to ask for or give permission.

我们也在下列情况中使用can:请求或给予许可。

I am finished, Can I go now?

我做完了。我现在可以走了吗?

Yes, you can.

好的,你可以走了。

and to ask someone to do something.

要求某人做某事。

Can you bring me the magazine?

你能把杂志拿给我吗?

Now, let's explore "be able to."

现在,让我们探讨一下be able to这个表达。

This expression is not a modal. It is the verb "to be" plus the adjective "able."The word "to" shows that an infinitive verb will follow.

这个表达不是情态动词。它由动词to be加上形容词able组成。to这个词表示后面会跟动词原形。

We use "be able to" when it is not possible to use "can" for abilities, such as after other modal verbs.

当不能用can表达能力时,我们就用be able to,例如,在其他情态动词之后。

I won't be able to take you to the train station. Sorry!

我不能送你去火车站了。对不起!

You should be able to finish the book in a few days.

你应该能在几天内读完这本书。

The words "won't", short for "will not", and "should" are modals. In English, we do not put two modals together. So, we cannot put "can" after them.

won’t是will not的缩写,它和should都是情态动词。在英语中,我们不会把两个情态动词放在一起。所以,我们不能把can放在他们后面。

We also use "be able to" to talk about small or large past successes.

我们也用be able to来表达过去或大或小的成功。

We were able to get a great price on the television.

我们能在电视上卖个好价钱。

She was able to win the math competition last month.

她在上个月的数学竞赛中获胜了。

But in negative form, we can use "be able to" or "could".

但在否定形式中,我们可以用be able to或could。

We couldn't get a great price on the television.

我们没能在电视上卖个好价钱。

She wasn't able to win the math competition last month.

她没能在上个月的数学竞赛中获胜。

But note that the negatives "wasn't able to" and "weren't able to" are a little more formal than "couldn't."

但是要注意,wasn’t able to和weren’t able to这两种否定形式比couldn’t更正式一点。

And that's Ask a Teacher.

以上就是本期《名师答疑》的全部内容。
