No Need to Worry about Learning Foreign Languages

When more and more people show a growing interest in learning foreign languages in a globalization era, some start to worry about cultural invasion, as they fear the trend might help to eclipse the unique value of the learners' own country.

The Beijing News quotes a commentator Xiong Peiyun as saying that such a concern is overreaction. Language is only a tool for communication and people do not need to worry about the growth in learning foreign languages, because they are used for communicating and exchanging good values among different countries.

While some people suggest the use of advanced communication technology to spread Chinese culture to the rest of the world, Xiong Peiyun reminds us that technology is not the key to everything. He says Chinese people should keep their values and wisdom in order to be beneficial to the public. This way, Chinese culture could be understood and appreciated by more foreigners.

Xiong Peiyun says values are an essential element for promoting a country's culture. Under globalization, countries should intensify mutual understanding, rather than use their cultures to fight against each other.

The commentator adds that any value that emphasizes freedom, equality, harmony and other good spirits deserves worldwide promotion.
