- Newly elected members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 17th CPC Central Committee meet the press.
- China successfully launches its first lunar orbiter.
- Iraq vows to help Turkey crack down on the PKK rebels.
- The U.S. imposes new sanctions against Iran.

The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China concluded in Beijing with nine members of the new Politburo Standing Committee being elected.
Hu Jintao was re-elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, for a second term.
He led the newly-elected Politburo Standing Committee members when the Committee met the domestic and international media on Monday.
Hu Jintao said the new team will make great efforts in striving for a further development of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
"We will be firmly committed to developing China, this is the Party's top priority in governing and rejuvenating the country. We'll concentrate on construction and economic growth, make wide-ranging progress in developing the socialist market economy, socialist democracy, an advanced socialist culture and a harmonious socialist society. We'll strive for scientific development by putting people first and making it comprehensive, balanced and sustainable."
He promised that the new team will continue to resolutely uphold the objective of serving the people wholeheartedly.
China's home-produced Chang'e 1 lunar orbiter was successfully launched on Wednesday evening, marking another major milestone in the development of China's space technology.
The lunar orbiter was launched by the Long March 3A carrier rocket. The Chang'e 1 lunar satellite is scheduled to circle the earth for three days before entering the Earth-moon transfer orbit. It is expected to enter the orbit of the moon around November 5th, and send back its first 3-D image of the moon in late November.
The Iraqi government has decided to expel the banned Kurdish Workers' Party or PKK from its northern territory.
At a press conference Tuesday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari vowed to help Turkey crack down on the PKK rebels.
"We agreed a common position to fight terrorism wherever it is and we will not allow any party or any group including the PKK to poison our bilateral relations..."
On Wednesday, Turkish warplanes attacked PKK targets along the border with Iraq.
Turkey has said there will be no ceasefire with the separatist rebels.
The United States has announced it is imposing new sanctions against Iran, charging that Tehran supports terrorism in the Middle East, exports missiles and is engaging in a nuclear buildup.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, was joined by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson at a news conference hosted by the State Department.
"We have worked with our fellow members of the UN Security Council to impose two sets of Chapter 7 sanctions on the Iranian government and we are now discussing a third Chapter 7 resolution. We are taking additional actions to defend our interests and our citizens and to help our friends to secure their countries."
The new sanctions target Iran's defense ministry, its Revolutionary Guard Corps and more than 20 Iranian companies, banks and individuals.
