China says it will continue to push forward talks with Japan on the East China Sea issue.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao.

"Based on the agreement reached by Chinese and Japanese leaders, China will continue to boost the negotiation with Japan on the issue of East China Sea, with a positive and pragmatic attitude. We hope that Japan will make joint effort with China."
The spokesman made the statement as the two sides started the tenth round of talks on the East China Sea Thursday in Beijing.

China says it supports the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Jianchao says China is willing to play an important and constructive role in the issue.

"The establishment of a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula fits the interests of the Korean people, and is also beneficial to the peace, stability and development in the region. China supports the establishment of such a pledge. As one of the parties involved in the nuclear talks, China will play a positive role in the progress."

South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun says North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has pledged to ensure the success of disarmament talks on stripping his country of nuclear weapons. Roh also quoted Kim's comments made to him.

"Kim Jong Il said 'We don't have any intention to possess nuclear weapons. It's a dying wish of my father. We have a firm determination on this. We will sincerely take part in six-party talks. The US appears to show its sincerity this time. We will ensure that the six-party talks will succeed'."

The two Korean leaders signed an accord during their summit vowing to make joint efforts to implement agreements made during the international nuclear talks.

A team of U.S. nuclear experts arrived in Pyongyang Thursday afternoon for talks on disabling North Korea's main nuclear reactor.

The U.S. team leader, top State Department Korea expert Sung Kim, told reporters at Beijing airport that he was looking forward to "a very productive visit."

Sung Kim said they expected to be there for about a week or so, to finalize discussions on disablement, the scope of disablement, and also to discuss a wide range of administrative issues related to the disablement.

The team, made up of technical experts from various US government departments, will put in place a plan to disable North Korea's nuclear facilities at Yongbyon.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says his country will be making a major troop withdrawal from Iraq next year, cutting its troops to 2,500 starting in the spring.

"With the Iraqi government and our allies, and subject to conditions on the ground, we plan from next spring to reduce force numbers in southern Iraq to a figure of two and a half thousand...At all times, therefore, achieving our long term aim of handing over security to the Iraqi armed forces and police, honoring our obligations to the Iraqi people and their security, ensuring the safety of our forces."

He says a decision on further cuts will be made once that reduction is complete, adding that Iraqi forces will take control of security in the southern province of Basra within two months.

The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games closed in Shanghai on Thursday. Organizers say five years of preparation have helped to yield a resounding success.

While expressing his appreciation for the volunteers' work, Yao Mingbao, deputy secretary-general of the Municipal Government, said considerate and comprehensive services also ensured the success of the Games.

"By leveraging all resources, the organizing committee developed a complete service plan and emergency responses, to ensure all-round safety and 24-hour services during the Games. "
