Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace(the

After all those Episode One finally was released. Did it live up to the hype? How could it? Still, perhaps, the biggest let down to the film is the fact that George Lucas won't play it safe. He makes a ambitious film structurally and technically. It's a great story, and the action get's complicated towards the end of the film. IT never takes off like the original Star Wars did, except for the Pod Race, which is the best race scene I've ever seen on film. The most amazing part is that it doesn't exist. It was computer generated. As were most things in this film, which is a great asset and at the same time seems to have diminished the perfermance of the actors. They acted against little if not nothing. Watto wasn't there, the giant city-planet Corruscant wasn't there. The film explodes visually in a way the originals never could.

The computer effects which encompase the film are the highs and lows. The lows include a comedic character named Jar Jar Binks. A child-like amphibious guy who is bannished from his underwater city for being clumsy. The ground battle involving the Gungans and the droid army is probably the weakest effects wise. There's nothing to give it reference, so they don't quite right. Though the droids are completely realistic, you can actually believe they are walking there. Watto is Anakin's owner, he's the best computer generated character. A scroundrel who bets on races and owns a junk shop where Anakin works.

The story is all about the politics of the old republic. The Jedi come in and solve problems, the boy scouts of the Galaxy. Naboo has been illeagally invaded by the Neumodians (the Trade Federation) and must escape here planet to plead with the senate for help. They have too land on Tatooine to repair their ship and ANakin is the only one who can help them.

The story itself is great, though it encompases things that aren't resolved. Most of which won't be resolved until episode 3 com
