    This is a novel about a lonely old fish man. The story line is very simple. The old fish man named Santiago who had spent 84 days on the sea without catching a fish have decided go far out of the sea to try his luck. His luck didn't fail him this time; he caught a very big fish that is even bigger than his skiff this time. However, it is too big for him to handle alone. He has to let the fish to drag the skiff along until it is too exhausted and decide to jump so that he can kill the fish. He spent 2 days and suffered a lot before he finally killed the big fish. On his way home, sharks attacked him to have a feast on the big fish he has caught which is tied along with the skiff. He killed a lot of sharks in order to protect the big fish, but there are simply too many of them. Santiago stopped his fight only when remain of the big fish is a head and a skeleton. After read this story, I sympathies the old fish man. He is lonely and poor. He appears to other people that he is too old for the only thing he was good at, fishing. Though Santiago is not willing to admit it, in his subconscious he feels it too. That is why he dreams only lions nowadays, as it is a symbol of power, victory and dignity. In order to prove himself, he struggled with the big fish and sharks for 3 days even at the risk of his own life. Though he returned only with a skeleton of the big fish, he is still a hero to me because he put on a brave fight with the big fish, sharks, loneliness and aging body. He is a man of strong will power. 奖励50英币

    A picture always in my mind, in which an old fishman was fighting an odd large fish with a fish-fork in hand,standing on a little boat rolling in the sea. I’d seen the novel in Chinese edition,written by Ernest Hemingway,when I was a eight yeas’ boy.

    I’d seen the novel in Chinese edition,written by Ernest Hemingway,when I was a eight yeas’ boy. It’s a very cheap book with lots of fine picture include which just I’ve talk above.I do thing that I could never forget the tough sophisticated face of the old man since then.

In this novel , Hemingway had shown his literary style all along, pithy,vivid and being good at describing soul inside, which was benefit from being a journalist. A essay of his,`Cat in the rain` also delivers the reader the characteristic in style perfectly.

    对于翻译的步骤我有以下看法；(1)。先逐字逐句译出，不要少掉什么东西，不避免某些翻译腔。(2)。抛开原文，只看译文，依原文风格(简练，沉郁，俏皮等)修改译文文字。

    *简易读物对打好基础极有用，要多读。一是数量要多，至少读四十本。二是要重复读，选出十至十五本，读三遍，读到许多问题印在脑子中。

    在基础阶段后期，或高年级，要努力背诵名篇，比如说，背50-100篇。无论从语言还是内容来说，这都是精华。背熟了，对了解西方文化，对研究文字的运用都有好处。

    语言是与文化紧密联系的，不了解英语国家的历史和文化，即便能说英语，在交流中也难免产生误解和其它困难。

    不要小看世界名著的英文简写本。基础阶段读它三，四十本才会体会到学英文究竟是怎么一回事。
