(Israel Observes Holocaust Remembrance Day)

Sirens sounded across Israel Monday to mark a moment of silence to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The two-minute siren at 10 a.m. is an annual tradition in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Israeli officials, Holocaust survivors and foreign dignitaries began the observance with a ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Six torches were lit in remembrance of the six-million Jews killed by the Nazis during World War Two.

But a dispute with the Vatican nearly marred the ceremony. The Vatican's ambassador threatened to boycott the observance because of a photograph in Yad Vashem's Holocaust Museum. The photo caption said wartime Pope Pius turned a blind eye to the Nazi genocide. The Vatican said it wanted the caption removed.

The museum expressed disappointment at the Vatican's objection, but said it was prepared to consider the Church's point. The envoy, in turn, agreed to attend the ceremony.
