Hello, and welcome to this edition of CRI Roundup. I'm Wen Jie in Beijing.

Let's take a look at some of the major events that have happened in China and around the world during the past week.

China pledged to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations in a responsible and constructive manner.

During the meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Chinese President Hu Jintao said China is willing to cooperate with the international society for a more peaceful and prosperous world.

Ban said he hopes that China can play a leading role in some global issues.

"Today the United Nations system expects China to help lead on the international agenda. For my part, I look to China, not simply because of its prominent position in the United Nations and within the broader world community. I do so because the responsibility of the nation is growing day by day."

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Liu Jianchao said the six-party nuclear talks had achieved "significant progress".

United States top nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill spoke highly of China's constructive role in six-party talk.
"China has played, I think, a very important role in the chair of six-party. So for China to step up in this means it must not only coordinates all the relationship with north Korea, also need to call on all the aspects of the new relationship with some of the other country, including the US."

North Korea submitted its long-awaited nuclear declaration to China and demolished (毁坏)the cooling tower at the Yongbyon nuclear reactor last week.

The cross-Strait weekend chartered flights from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan has been launched.
The first batch of 760 mainland tourists are enjoying their visit in Taiwan and will stay there for 10 days.

China has promised to ensure security during the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

The country's vice-minister of public security, Meng Hongwei says an anti-terrorist unit of commandos, police officers and army troops is on high alert to combat attempted terrorist attacks.

"With impelling measures in cooperation in reconnaissance and information sharing, China has effectively combated against potential terrorist moves by ETLO before the sports games."

In addition, anti-terrorist drills and emergency plans have been widely implemented (应用的)in preparation for possible threats to the Olympics.

China has also conducted a wide range of international cooperation in the security and anti-terror front for the Beijing Olympics.

This week, the Olympic torch relay started at Wuzhong city in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and concluded its trip in the region at its provincial capital, Yinchuan.

The torch relay then passed four cities, namely Yan'an, Yangling, Xianyang, Xi'an in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. The Olympic flame continues its journey in neighbouring Gansu Province on Saturday.

China's aerospace experts have left Beijing for the final tests on the Shenzhou-7 Spacecraft, which is expected to be launched in October.

Zhang Bairan is chief designer of the spacecraft(太空船).

''First, astronauts(宇航员) on Shenzhou-7 will conduct spacewalk and do scientific experiments in space. Also, the spacecraft is fully loaded with fuels to support the three astronauts to travel in space for up to five days. Meanwhile, we will also conduct some new experiments on satellite technology during its flight.''

Shenzhou-7 is set to carry out the first flight of China's second phase of manned space mission. Experts have worked out more than 30 emergency plans to ensure the safety of the astronauts.

in other parts of the world:

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said his country's presidency of the European Union will face a difficult task as Ireland voted "No" to the  Lisbon treaty(《里斯本条约》, which could make the block's reform impossible.

Sarkozy also warned that Europe must stop accepting new members until the current political crisis triggered by the Irish vote is resolved.

''We should have reformed our institutions before the enlargement.''
The EU presidency was handed over to France by Slovenia.

U.S. President George Bush has reiterated that diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue is "the first option" although "all options are on the table."
Bush made the remarks on Wednesday at a White House news conference.

"The first option for the United States is to solve this problem diplomatically. I've made it clear that you can't solve a problem diplomatically unless there are other people at the table with you."

A day earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Iran is "seriously and carefully examining" a package of economic incentive offered by U.S. and its negotiating partners.

U.S. officials reacted cautiously to Mottaki's comments, stressing that Tehran has offered no sign of suspending uranium(铀)-enrichment activities.

The United States and its western allies accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of developing civilian nuclear power.
