On Monday, The Beijing News reported a 7-year-old girl was refused entry to the National Library of China because she was under 18 years of age, and she was too young to read some books in the Library.

Today, The Beijing News carried an editorial on this incident. It said that, as the future of the country, children need to absorb knowledge through reading various kinds of books and libraries are best places for that. So that poses the question: are there libraries for children?

The editorial said well-established libraries such as the National Library of China, are mainly used for research. What children need is more community libraries with children's books and toys.

In fact, community libraries are popular in some developed countries. In Denmark, if children read late into the night, they can sleep in the library. In Japan, soft drink bars and restrooms are available for children. And most community libraries in western countries are founded by NGOs and sponsored by companies.

Children are the pillars of the future of China. The newspaper hopes more people care for the literacy of the future generations. It suggested the government build more community libraries to create a cozy environment for children to enrich their knowledge.
