Chinese President Hu Jintao took a trip using Beijing's public transportation system to test its readiness(准备,方便) for the upcoming Olympic Games.

He stressed that the entire transportation system should guarantee safety and speed as the host city has promised to the world.

"The metro's administrators should provide safe, comfortable and fast transportation for both Olympic personnel(职员) and ordinary citizens during the Games, since the number of visitors from home and abroad will increase dramatically."

The Chinese President also test rode the high-speed train that shuttles between Beijing and the neighboring Tianjin Municipality, which will host some football preliminary matches during the Games.

Local officials say they've made full preparations to provide safe and comfortable environment for tourists from all over the world, while people there expressed their welcome to guests from around the world.

Gao Wen, a yoghourt shop runner, says he expects more foreign tourists to come to his bar for Tibetan yoghourt and snacks.

"It is good news that Tibet has resumed its reception of overseas tourists. Tibet is now quite safe and comfortable. I hope more people can come here to appreciate the real charming Tibet."

Provincial authorities across China are trying every means possible to reduce the danger brought by the continuous torrential rains(滂沱大雨).

Chinese meteorologists have predicted that northern China will receive more rainfall than average next month.

Xu Xiaofeng, vice director of  China Meteorological Administration(中国气象局), called for preventive measures in face of possible flooding.

"The rainy season has not arrived in the region between the Yellow River and the Huaihe River, based on previous data. However, we should pay special attention and be prepared for possible flooding."

He says north China is less capable of dealing with floods than the south, and should be on high alert and prepare for the worst conditions.

China will allocate an extra 70 billion Yuan, or about over 10 billion U.S. dollars, as reconstruction fund for the quake regions in southwest China's Sichuan province and neighboring provinces.

Xie Xuren, China's Finance Minister, says the launch of the quake reconstruction fund is very necessary.

"The central government has established funds to stabilize budget in 2006. Currently, the fund has over 100 billion Yuan that can be used. Allocating part of the funds for reconstruction will not affect the regular functions of the budget. It is a way to properly satisfy the needs for reconstruction."

The official elaborated that the fund will be used in at least four areas, including subsidies for reconstructing public buildings and funding for disaster prevention and control.

The Japan destroyer "Sazanami" has become the first Japanese warship to visit China since World War II.

The ship, set off from Hiroshima(广岛) on a voyage for a return visit, arrived in south China's city of Zhanjiang, bringing quake-aid materials from the Japanese Defense Ministry and Self Defense Forces.

Shinichi Tokumaru, Japanese Ambassador to China, says the visit by the Japanese warship to China would help consolidate the friendly ties between the two countries.

"To consolidate Sino-Japanese ties requires people of the two countries to deepen their mutual understanding and trust. This is especially important for the two countries' defense departments, which shoulder great responsibility in peaceful development."

In other parts of the world,

The South Korean government has announced its decision to resume US beef imports starting Thursday, despite weeks of anti-government protests over food safety.

The announcement made on Wednesday immediately triggered protests in the capital, Seoul. About 2,500 people rallied in central Seoul and as some of them attempted to reach the presidential office through a back alley, fighting resulted.

The police said more than 100 people were detained during the day but there had been no reports of serious injuries.

Philippine President Gloria Arroyo said owner of the capsized ferry is "accountable" for the accident, in which some 700 people are still missing while only 48 survivors had been confirmed as of Wednesday.

Arroyo said ferry operators should take precautionary measures before setting out to the sea.

"Vessel operators should carefully study typhoon movements to ensure that the vessel will not be within the danger area directly affected by the typhoon, and signal one, two, three and four within the danger zone until they reach their destinations."

Affected by Typhoon Fengshen, the Philippine ferry overturned after sailing into rough weather en route from Manila to the central city of Cebu.

The typhoon then swept through southern China during the week.
