詹姆斯·帕特森（1947－），现居佛罗里达州，被誉为美国惊悚推理小说天王，他的作品屡屡创下美国书市排行榜销售纪录。只要新作问世，即能登上《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜第一名。

    在过去十年间，詹姆斯·帕特森创作了两个新侦探小说系列：“亚历克斯·克劳斯”系列（Alex Cross），包括《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜第一名的《伦敦桥》《一只大坏狼》《四只瞎眼鼠》《玛丽，玛丽》；“女子谋杀俱乐部”系列（The Women’s Murder Club），包括同样高居畅销书排行榜首位的《1号死亡》《2次机会》《3度夺魂》《7月4日》《第5个骑手》，最新出版的这本最畅销小说《第5个骑手》打破了销售记录。作者同时也发表了多部热销爱情小说，包括《苏珊娜给尼古拉斯的日记》《山姆写给詹尼弗的信》。其作品累计销售超过8000万册。

「廣告大亨」搖身變為「懸疑大師」：詹姆斯．派特森（James Patterson）

　　廣告人最講究的就是「創意」。有了創意就代表無往不利，因此優秀的廣告人來寫推理小說，八成會成為知名的暢銷作家，美籍小說家詹姆斯．派特森（James Patterson）便是一例。

少年得志的廣告公司執行長

　　一九四七年，派特森出生於紐約市北方五十里處的紐堡（Newburgh），自小在求學路上一直是個好學生，他從聖派屈克基督男子高中畢業時是學生致詞代表，在曼哈頓學院結業時獲頒「最優等獎」，爾後也以第一名成績取得范德比爾特大學的英語碩士文憑。
　　好學生上了職場不一定會是好員工，然而滿腦子創意的新人進了廣告公司，卻是呈三級跳的方式竄升。派特森在一九七一年之時進入廣告業只是個初階文案人員，但是憑著多元創意的優異表現，他所負責的客戶例如柯達、漢堡王、玩具反斗城、貝爾大西洋電話公司、必治妥等廠商都打開了知名度，並且在國際間的廣告大賞中獲獎連連。派特森的官職一路高升，他不但成為公司史上最年輕的執行創意總監，甚至還當上最「幼齒」的執行長。一九九○年至一九九六年間擔任了智威湯遜廣告公司（J. Walter Thompson）北美地區的主席，儼然已是廣告界的大亨。後來他和同僚彼得．金（Peter Kim）合寫了一本非小說類的著作《美國說實話的這一天》（The Day America Told the Truth），結果登上了暢銷排行榜。

被退稿二十六次的慘痛紀錄

　　當創意延伸至推理小說的領域時，活躍於廣告界的派特森如今已貴為全美公認的「懸疑大師」。事實上，派特森的創作生涯起初並不順遂，他的處女作《湯瑪斯．貝瑞曼號碼》（The Thomas Berryman Number）曾被二十六家出版商退稿，這個紀錄恐怕連「謀殺天后」克莉絲蒂也要自嘆弗如，後來才獲得「小布朗」（Little, Brown）出版公司的首肯得以出版。這麼一本命運坎坷的小說，誰會料到居然拿下該年的愛倫坡獎年度最佳處女作，那一年是一九七六年，當時派特森才二十七歲而已。
