not的独立应用

not接在think, believe, guess, hope, expect, hear, say, am afraid等动词后面可单独用以代表否定的陈述。(so代表肯定的陈述)

It looks like rain. Is it going to rain?

看起来要下雨的样子，会下雨吗？

I think so/I don't think so/I think not. 我想会/我想不会。

His heart disease is getting worse. I hope not.

他的心脏病变严重了。 希望不会。

Will he sponsor us？ I'm afraid not.

他会出钱赞助我们吗？ 恐怕不会。

Is he angry with us? I guess not.

他生我们的气吗? 我猜是没有。

Tony is going to marry Janice . I hope /guess /am afraid not.

Tony 要跟Janice结婚了。 希望/猜/恐怕不会。

Will his father punish him? I expect /hope /say not.

他爸爸会处罚他吗？ 希望/我说不会。

Will Mary ask us for help? I believe /suppose not.

Mary会要求我们帮忙吗？ 我相信/认为不会。

Can I stay overnight at Mary's home? I am afraid not.
