Among the 51,000 fans at the sold-out stadium, the Germans largely outnumbered the Spaniards, but the victory belonged to the few, as Spain hold up the Delaunay Cup at last.

The cheerful moment came in the 33rd minute, when the Liverpool striker Fernando Torres sped past the German defence and dinked a beautiful chip over the advancing German keeper and into the empty net.

The goal rewarded an ever improving Spanish side which set up several scoring opportunities once it braved early German domination.

Three-time champion Germany looked hesitant most of the time.

In Spanish capital Madrid, fans jumped up and down and waved flags as they watched the final victory of their team.

The Spaniards have not tasted a sweet European victory for 44 years since they last lifted the European Cup after beating Soviet Union in 1964.
