College students with degrees in unpopular majors in China are finding it easier this year to get jobs after they graduate.

Students studying metallurgy, civil engineering, geological exploration and oil exploration are among those popular in the job market.

Tu Yun has the details.

Reporter:

Both large and small Chinese companies in these fields are expanding rapidly to meet the country's growing construction and energy needs. They are hiring scores of workers to fill new jobs.

Ge Shirong, President of the China University of Mining and Technology, says that the job supply-to-demand ratio for these students could reach one to 20.

Ma Yaofeng, a metallurgy major from West China's Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, says that several companies approached him about a job when he was a junior.

"There are renowned enterprises like Baosteel Company, Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Corp. and the Angang Steel Company. And there are also small and medium-sized companies like the Laigang Group."

But students who have recently received degrees in traditionally popular major such as finance, journalism, law and the arts are having a tougher time finding satisfactory jobs, even for those who have graduated from front-tier universities.

Meanwhile, academic experts suggest that high school seniors who are now applying to college learn as much as they can about different majors before they select one.

Sun Dongdong, a professor at Peking University, says students should be rational while making a choice.

"Students should not follow trends when they fill their college applications. They should make choices based on their abilities and interests."
