An opinion poll in Taiwan shows an increase in the popularity of opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou after state prosecutors indicted him on corruption charges. Sixty-one percent of those surveyed by Taiwan's Daily News believe Ma is clean and honest, up at least five percentage points from last November.
On Tuesday, Ma resigned as chairman of Taiwan's Nationalist Party, but said he will still compete in Taiwan's 2008 presidential election. Ma has been considered a front-runner in the contest, and observers say he may stand as an independent candidate with informal backing from the Nationalist Party.
Taipei's prosecutor charged Ma with embezzling 333-thousand dollars while he was mayor of Taipei. Prosecutors say they will ask the court for leniency if Ma is convicted.
(Britain, United States Rank Lowest for Child Well-Being Among Wealthy Nations)
A new report by the United Nations Children's Fund ranks Britain and the United States as the worst among wealthy countries for the well-being of children. The U.N. agency's report, released Wednesday, looked at around 40 indicators to gauge the lives of children in 21 economically advanced nations. The United States was ranked 20th, while Britain was last.
Britain and the United States were in the bottom third of the rankings for five of the six categories -- health and safety, risk-taking, relationships, young people's own sense of well-being and children's material well-being. Education was the only category where both countries remained above the bottom third.
Child well-being was rated highest in Northern Europe, with the Netherlands and Sweden leading the way. The report said no direct link was found between gross domestic product and children's well-being. The Czech Republic, for example, received a higher overall ranking than France.
