The Chinese National Bureau of Statistics reports that the average wages offered to urban employment staff is 12,964 Yuan, up by 18 percent in the first half of this year, compared with that of the same season last year.
Beijing Youth Daily carries a commentary saying that those figures aroused doubts in the public and most people hold negative attitudes toward this type of statistical data.
The paper says due to the fact that the consumer price index remains high, many inhabitants felt the pressure of rising prices over the second half of last year.
While the 18 percent increase exceeded that of the CPI, there appears to be unhappy voices and they deserve to be heard.
For most people, statistics are hard to understand and far removed from their daily life. But the statistics on commodity prices are more relevant to their lives. Therefore, statistics of this nature should be presented in a way to help people know what exactly is happening in the general picture. Experts suggest statistical agencies adopt a public-friendly approach in their work. And it is equally important to let the public know how and what group of people are chosen to make their statistical conclusions. This will help make their work more acceptable rather than foreign.
