The Opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games kicked off in the national stadium, known as Bird's Nest,last Saturday .
4000 athletes from 147 countries and regions shared the exciting moment with tens of thousands of invited guests and spectators before setting to compete in games they've trained hard for.
In his speech at the opening ceremony,Liu Qi, President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games said the trust that the world has in China led the way for Beijing's selection as the host city of the 2008 Paralympic Games.
"Both the Chinese government and the Chinese people have demonstrated huge passion in supporting the Paralympic Games.
We'll also showcase the passion of the Chinese people to the world."
The scale of the Paralympic Games in Beijing is unprecedented. Both the number of athletes and delegations participating surpassed those of the previous events.
Philip Caven, Chairman of the International Paralympic Committee, said the Beijing Paralympic Games are a milestone in the history of Paralympic movement.
The annual "China International Fair for Investment and Trade" kicked off on Monday in Southeast China's Xiamen city.
Speaking at the International Investment Forum, China's Vice Premier Wang Qishan says the country will continue to improve its investment environment.
Wang Qishan also called for international investors to make continued contributions to China's green development.
"China will continue to encourage foreign investment to participate in the development of China's northeast and western regions."
As the world's largest investment promotion event, this year's fair has attracted about ten thousand foreign business people and over 400 foreign organizations.
After meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to withdraw all Russian troops from buffer zones around Georgia's breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia within one month and after international forces are deployed there.
"We worked on accomplishment of the plan, which has been adjusted. I think that Russia is completely fulfilling it."
Medvedev added that Russia committed itself to removing its checkpoints from the Black Sea port of Poti under the condition that Georgia signs a pledge not to use force against Abkhazia.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu has expressed China's congratulations to newly elected Pakistani President Asif al-Zardari.
"China congratulates Zardari for being elected Pakistani president and the China-Pakistan strategic partnership of cooperation will make new progress."
Zardari was sworn in as Pakistani president at a ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday for a five-year term.
