Talking It Over

 Dear Maggie,
I am a freshman. I feel that things in college are quite different from those in my high school days.
I don' t know how to spend my time here. Every day I go out then come back. It' s hard to say what I' ve learned and what I've lost. It seems that I am just another person whom I cannot control. It is not the college life I had longed for.
I've lost my goals. I am eager to change, but I don' t know what I could do. Do you have some suggestions?
    Best regards,
    Yours
    Seamettle
    Dear Sdamettle,
College is a world of its own. Some say that it was the best time of their life. "I was free. FREE! No more teenage drama! No more parental sniffing!" said one friend. Others respond to college in a whole different attitude. "I wanted to crawl into a hole and die," said another friend. College is what you want it and what you see it to be. No doubt that it' s different from high school.
During high school, you had a concrete goalget into college. You had a secure network of friends. You were in a stage of your life that still needed adult guidance. It was: do this, do that. But, still, it was a life that you knew, that you were accustomed to.
The first year of college is probably the hardest. It' s time to ask the bigger questions. Where am I going? What am I doing? Who am I? Am I going to make it? It' s a sea of competition. And, as a first year college student, you might see yourself as the anchovy (鳀,一种小鱼). You might think that everyone around you might know exactly where they are going in life, what their goals are. You might even seriously believe that the person sitting next to you in class knows exactly what the professor is talking about(even though that person might be thinking about lunch).
But, we're all lost in the blue here.
Remember that college is a playground. You can go on the swings, or the slide, or the sandbox. There' s a wide variety of choices. Have fun. Do what you want to do and find your passion. Find yourself. Yon'll be just another face in the sea of faces until you do.
And as for your goals? The goals that you think you have lost are still in you somewhere. Just, grab on to it and little by little you will find the way through college. It' s just the first year! You have many years to come. Be patient and know that there are people around you who love you and support you-friends,family, professors.
Break the monotony, Seamettle. Step out and explore. Don' t get trapped in a world of getting up and coming back. Do things that you love. Talk to your classmates. Love and learn.
    Yours,
    MaggieNU2
