Dessert in the wake of A Grand Banquet
Sidelights of Mrs. Taylor, the former SOM President, at the Planning Seminar
One more word would be deemed redundant. SOM, the three capital letters, are more often than not reminiscent of an image --- “the Design Heavyweight ”in architectural planning arena in China. Two decades ago, SOM Company carved a niche in China. The years since then witnessed its mounting competitive edge in myriad cities in this dreamland, middle and large, which is disarmingly incarnated in the following brainchildren: the Shanghai Jinmao Tower, the across-the-board planning of Huangpu River’s banks, Beijing International Trade Center, and Convention Plaza Office Tower in Hong Kong, to mention only a few.
On 24th of May, Mrs. Marilyn Jordan Taylor, the former president and corporate partner of SOM Company, sponsored a seminar entitled “Urban Construction and Planning in New York and Shanghai” at Tongji University in Shanghai, followed by a round table meeting with the Architectural Design and Research Institute of that University and a few other institutions, further probing into such issues as “mounting population and metropolis, traffic conditions in burgeoning cities and their sustainable development.
Mrs. Taylor’s medium height never prevents her from being a heavyweight in SOM Company. Wearing a rose nude Chinese-style coat with buttons down the front and a ready smile, she looks quite “Chinese” during her stay here, making the communication between the host and guest parties more enjoyable and relaxing. The first impression left in people’s minds is her confidence, kindness and goodwill. However, as an expert in this field, she delivered her sagacity and talents, together with her judicious report. People expected that she could present an academic speech and dialogue on the comparisons over Urban Construction and Planning between New York and Shanghai. However, regrettably, she merely briefed five projects ranging from Time Warner Plaza to the Freedom Tower redesigned on the original site of the demolished World Trade Center in New York, as well as some design concepts out of her interpretation. Straitened in a tight schedule, Mrs. Taylor still succeeded in Triggering quite a ripple with her sophisticated yet subtle remarks, extravagant conception, and forthright criticism.
Having claimed to be from a small city, she valued the trip to Shanghai --- a much bigger one --- as a priceless opportunity to interact with Chinese counterparts, the architects and urban planners here. To her knowledge, the territory of average architects is confined to such issues as the globalization,
competition and overcrowd of the city, whereas her turf goes much further and wider --- urban infrastructure construction and sustainable development, precisely due to the very fact that cities are dwelled by half of the 6.6 billion people on this planet --- the fact that should be on the radar of the experts in the architectural planning circle. In her opinion, to address this issue, some principles shall be observed. The first is related to urban traffic, for seamless traffic planning serves as the prerequisite for urban development. The second lies in the density of a city, which shouldn’t be divorced from public space. Here, She illustrated the Shanghai Chongming Island Planning Project, an American architectural prize laureate, which was co-brain mastered by SOM Company and Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Institute. The third principle focuses on the design of high-rise, which shouldn’t be distanced from the consideration given to, among others, human being and the design of which should be based on its residents.
The sharing of time with Mrs. Taylor was short, but not her crystal-clear ingenuity in design. For instance, she gave an example of the planning and design of the 16-hectare area of Lower Manhattan in New York, three minutes drive to Manhattan, and five minutes to Brooklyn. Along the riverside lies a one-mile viaduct project. She ventured to restore half of the vehicle line to walkway, and even went further to blanket it with greeneries --- a bold mentality by all means. Undoubtedly, less motor traffic is indispensable to the materialization of this blueprint. Since 70-80% of New Yorkers began to choose public transport system, it will not be a bad idea to emancipate the space squeezed by vehicles for urban development. Admittedly, how to tackle the heavy-traffic volume on the elevated line remains a
question mark, which is bound to meet NO voices since its inception, for example, from the government. What’s more, the fulfillment of this design will be a story years away from today, but she regarded the proposal of such program to the government should be the duties and obligations of an architect like herself, claiming that if we believe it is a good ides, why not just try it? The idea of switching half of the elevated highway to walkway is viewed as fool’s paradise from domestic point of view. In this connection, conceivably, the success of the SOM Company is in part thanks to such confidence.
The implementation of the project calls for the devotion of a well-organized team, at the initial stage of which each member could contribute his own pearl of wisdom, followed by the synergy between the architects and relevant technical personnel, who are to be acquainted with the latest architectural structure and up-to-date building materials, and then converge them into the design. In the speech, Mrs. Taylor uttered her idea in an explicit manner that “our architects and structural engineers are destined for innovation and more efficient structural system while for sure dumping such protruding structure as that of new CCTV building in Beijing,
With regard to the urban planning in Shanghai, Mrs. Taylor favors the mindset that buildings of different height and variety are able to parallel with one another. But she frowns at the layout that residential quarters are on one side of the city while the office buildings are on the other, as virtually such status quo only invites traffic gridlock. The utilization of urban water front landscape in Shanghai
is quite impressive, unfortunately, there will be a long way to go for the curb of population density. Nowadays, as Mrs. Taylor sees it, three priorities probably are: the sustainable development and urban greening, replenishment and reutilization of the incumbent urban areas, and the expansion of this cosmopolis and its corresponding satellite cities.
