天天小故事－2008/08/28 －The Story Of The Thunder God

One day, the Thunder God was returning to Heaven after finishing his job on earth. The Thunder God is a high-ranking general in the Jade Emperor’s kingdom who is responsible for punishing wicked people on earth and handing down sentences. When the sky is dark, the wind is strong, there is thunder and rain, the Thunder God is extremely angry and is punishing someone who has been wicked on earth.

It was getting dark as he flew over a stream. The Thunder God looked down and caught a glimpse of a woman who was kneeling at the side of the river with a pot beside her. She appeared to be washing rice away in the stream.

The Thunder God became angry at the thought of this woman wasting precious food and was about to strike her down when he noticed several raw papayas lying near the woman. They were cut in halves and the Thunder God could see the white seeds in the centre of each papaya.

The Thunder God looked extra carefully to make sure what he was seeing was real. He realised that the woman was not washing away rice as he had first thought but washing away the seeds of the papaya in preparation for dinner.

The Thunder God was upset to think that he had almost punished an innocent person and sped back to the Court of Evening Cloud. He told the Jade Emperor of his near fatal mistake.

“Thunder, I know that you would not punish anyone who does not rightly deserve to be, and that it was only because you couldn’t see properly that you nearly punished someone who was innocent,” said the Jade Emperor.

The Jade Emperor turned to the rest of the immortal court officials and asked “Who here can offer assistance to the Thunder God so he does not do this again?”

Golden Star stepped forward and said, “My Lord, we could send Mother Lightning before Thunder God. Mother Lightning would be able to light the world so that Thunder God can see everything clearly before he strikes.”

“Wonderful,” exclaimed the Jade Emperor, “From now on, Mother Lightning will always go before Thunder.”
