继续关于帆船/航海的俗语：

a) Learn the ropes
【意思】understandnew things 学习新知识
【语源】Learn theropes本是航海用语：新水手需要学习如何用绳子打各种结，以及哪根绳子控制哪张帆等等。后来the ropes就广义化了，泛指新知识。东西都学到了以后就叫’know the ropes’，show / teach someone the ropes即教人做……，例如You'd better find someone to show you theropes if you're going to fix the car yourself.
【例句】It'll take some time for the new receptionist to learn the ropes.

b) Go overboard (on)
【意思】do or saymore than you need to；to do something too much, or to be too excited and eager aboutsomething；to go toextremes, especially as a result of enthusiasm.. 过分追求；走极端；做过火
【语源】overboard的意思是over the side of a ship or boat,esp. into or in the water，即“在船两侧之外”à
落水。在甲板范围内，怎么走都可以。但是走到外面，就过度了。通常与on连用，常用于形容对某人某事的意见，比如批判或褒奖过度等等。
【例句】He went completely overboard on her birthday and bought her adiamond ring.
