The 19 Olympic test events held from July to October should be considered a success, Beijing Games organizers BOCOG said in a mid-term evaluation on Wednesday.
"The International Olympic Committee was 'very pleased' with the 19 Olympic test events," Yang Shu'an, BOCOG executive vice-president and deputy director of the organizing committee of the Good Luck Beijing Sports Events, quoted IOC President Jacques Rogge as saying. Rogge made the comment during his recent visit to the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.
A total of 42 test events were scheduled to run prior to the Beijing Games, with 26 planned for this year.
Event organization and venue operations reached a high level in the test events, according to a report by Horizon Research Consultancy Group, an independent survey company hired by BOCOG.
Yang said BOCOG's warning mechanisms proved themselves during the test events.
"For example, we had a specific plan to deal with typhoons before the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong in August."
"And when the typhoon really hit Hong Kong just on the event's opening day, we immediately informed the audiences and athletes about the rescheduling plan. Actually, we were glad to have the typhoon because it provided us with a good opportunity to test our readiness to deal with contingencies," he said.
However, BOCOG pledged to try harder to perfect every detail in the following test events.
"We are very demanding on ourselves," said Yang, naming a few flaws that were not mentioned by the IOC.
"We have to improve our security system, and smoothen our work flow between different departments."
"Personally, I think the biggest challenge will be training the volunteers and technical staff, as most of them don't have related experience," Yang said, adding that they need to improve their professional attitude and communication skills.
