Peking University, one of the top universities in China, now plans to include a swipe-card security system at its entrances. Ordinary people may now have to reserve and register for a visit to the univeristy in the future.
However, the Beijing News published an article arguing that it is inappropriate to adopt such a system at universities. Public universities should be open to all and people should be free to visit.
The newspaper says in some foreign universities, the public can enjoy relaxing on the lawn and even have free access to university libraries.
This could be a good example for Chinese universities to learn from, as a university should continue to operate with open minds and open gates.
