16 Things You Should Never Say to a New Mom

New moms worry about a lot of things: whether they’re nursing properly, what they can do to help their newborn avoid SIDS, why their baby’s not sleeping on a regular schedule yet. They shouldn’t have to deal with rude comments from the peanut gallery on top of all that—so show a little sensitivity when chatting with a rookie mom by not saying these things.

 “She looks nothing like you.”

“My baby started sleeping through the night at three months.”

“Can I hold him?” No, stranger, you can’t.

Any sort of comment about how huge or tiny the baby is. The baby is the perfect size, actually!

“Breastfeeding came to me so easily.”

“You should let the baby cry it out at night.”

“Breast is best.” Some moms just can’t make breastfeeding work—there’s no need to give them a guilt trip about it.

“I fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans in three weeks.”

“I could never go back to work. I’d miss my baby too much.” Ouch. Pretty sure every mother misses her baby while at work.

“Don’t worry—I’m not contagious anymore.”

“You look exhausted. Are you getting any sleep?”

“Look at that cone head!”

“I guess she’s just a fussy baby.”

“My baby never cried.” Pretty sure all babies cry…

“Give him to me. I’ll get him to stop crying.” Um, did Mom ask for your help?

↓↓↓“I’m like her second mother.” No—actually, I’m her first and only mother.
