Setting aside their cyber and maritime disputes, President Barack Obama and the president of China sealed their nations’ participation in last year’s Paris climate change agreement. The formal U.S.-Chinese announcement means the accord could enter force by the end of the year, a faster-than-anticipated timeline.
Tropical storm Hermine was intensifying Saturday as it moved slowly up the Atlantic Coast with heavy rains, wind and storm surges making a mess of the holiday. Hermine already caused two deaths, damaged homes and businesses, and left hundreds of thousands without electricity from Florida to Virginia.
Speaking in front of thousands of lay volunteers from around the world in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis said that Mother Teresa “deserves” sainthood. He was speaking on the eve of a ceremony to formally proclaim Mother Teresa a saint.
Pope Francis also took time on Saturday to bless and shake the paw of an Italian rescue dog named Leo. The black Labrador retriever was part of a rescue team looking for survivors in the wake of the devastating earthquake in central Italy.
